Reading Readiness

Language, reading, and writing skills begin to develop in the first three years of life. Parents who begin reading to their children early on teach the importance of this skill, and WIC Professionals can help communicate this important message.

A Few Facts:

  • Children learn to love the sound of language even before they are able to recognize printed words on a page.
  • Reading books aloud to children stimulates and expands their imagination, and is the single most important activity for developing their literacy skills.
  • The President of the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends reading daily to children beginning at the age of six months.
  • For infants up to 18 months, consider a "library" that includes a collection of nursery rhymes, a bedtime book, a book of simple songs or finger plays, a tactile cloth book or one with textured pages, a simple animal picture book, and at least one "see-and-know" book that introduces common items. Offer brief but frequent read-aloud sessions each day from these books.
  • Reading provides a quiet time to spend with your child, and can be a bonding experience.
  • Early exposure to reading can lead to a successful start to kindergarten, and it lays the groundwork for future success in life. Storybooks can be a great way to teach your children about food.
